It turns out Globo and Pyra were simply exercising their rights under the terms of service to change those terms with or without notice … the same rights that Blogger.com reserves to itself. The Blogger Brasil page now redirects you to a new Globo subscriber center where plans start at 20 reals ($7, but probably the equivalent of US$20 in relation to local wage scales).

So, absent any information to the contrary (I’ve been e-mailing Globo for a couple of days now), it seems awfully coincidental that Blogger.com.br was experiencing a hack attack for six days at the same time that it was implementing some significant changes to its back end.

The fairy-tale ending of the story, however, is that the customer really is king: So many people complained about the threat to erase their blogs if they didn’t accept the new subscription policy that Globo hastily wrote in a new clause (there’s even a typo) extending the free accounts of subscribers who signed up before Dec. 2003. The consensus among brazucobloggers now seems to be that Blogger can’t be trusted (and Blogger.com bloggers, note once again that the mothership has the same TOS).

So there’s something of an exodus going on: One of the other big portals, UOL, has a tutorial on how to import your Blogger entries into their blogging service, for example.

All in all, it’s a nice little fable about media giants and the little blogs that could, as well as a cautionary tale about the fragility of free blogging. Let’s just hope folks in the blogging services industry realize that the free option is what keeps interest high and develops the skilled users who might one day see the advantage of paying for advanced services.”
